Andrea Ghez Biography
Andrea Ghez full name Andrea Mia Ghez is an American American astronomer and professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at UCLA. She won The Nobel Prize In Physics 2020 for her discovery of a supermassive compact object at the center of our galaxy. She shared one half of the prize with Reinhard Genzel,..
It was the moon landings that inspired Ghez to want to become the first female astronaut and she considers her highschool chemistry teacher her most influential female role model.
Andrea Ghez Nobel Prize
American astronomer Ghez, is the fourth woman to ever win the Nobel prize in physics, and German astrophysicist Genzel was jointly awarded “for the discovery of a supermassive compact object at the center of our galaxy,” the committee said.
“I hope I can inspire other young women into the field,” Ghez, a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, told the news conference by phone.
Ghez and Genzel developed methods using the world’s largest telescopes to see through clouds of interstellar gas and dust in our galaxy to discover an invisible and extremely heavy object governing the orbits of stars.
Their discoveries in the 1990s were evidence of a supermassive black hole — 4 million times the mass of our sun — at the center of the Milky Way.
Andrea Ghez Age
Born on June 16, 1965, Andre is 55 years old as of 2020.
Andrea Ghez Height
Andrea’s height is still under investigation.
Andrea Ghez Supermassive Black hole
Three physicists have won the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics for discoveries relating to the most massive and mysterious objects in the Universe — black holes.
British physicist Roger Penrose, 89, receives half the prize for theoretical work that in 1965 showed how Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity should result in the formation of black holes, regions with a gravitational pull so strong that not even light can escape.
Since the 1990s, Ghez and Genzel have led groups that have mapped the orbits of stars close to the galactic centre. These studies led them to conclude that an extremely massive, invisible object must be dictating their frantic movements.
According to a statement released by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which awards the prize, the object known as Sagittarius A* is the most convincing evidence yet of a supermassive black hole at the centre of the Milky Way.
Andrea Ghez Education
For her education, Andrea received her BS in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She, later on, went to get her Ph.D in 1992 under the direction of Gerry Neugebauer at the California Institute of Technology.
Andrea Ghez Family
Not much is known about Andrea’s personal life. It is known that it was her mother who supported her goal of being an astronaut. Further information regarding who and where her parents and siblings are is still under investigation.
Andrea Ghez Husband
Andrea is a married woman. She is married to geologist and research scientist Tom LaTourrette. Together the couple has two sons together.
Andrea Ghez Networth
Ghez is a very hardworking and committed woman who has no doubt earned each and every penny she is worth. Andrea has an estimated Networth of $ 10 Million or more.
