Anthony Bourdain Bio

Anthony Bourdain (Anthony Michael Bourdain) was an American chef, author and media personality born on 25th June 1956 in New York City, New York, U.S. He died on 8th June 2018 after committing suicide. He was one of the most influential chefs in the world winning five Grammy Awards.

Anthony Bourdain Death

On 8th June 2018 Anthony was found unresponsive in his hotel room in France by Eric Ripert, his close friend and a French chef. They were both filming an upcoming episode of Anthony’s show, Parts Unknown.

CNN confirmed his death saying

“It is with extraordinary sadness we can confirm the death of our friend and colleague, Anthony Bourdain. His love of great adventure, new friends, fine food and drink and the remarkable stories of the world made him a unique storyteller. His talents never ceased to amaze us and we will miss him very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with his daughter and family at this incredibly difficult time.”

Christian de Rocquigny du Fayel, France public prosecutor, told People magazine that Bourdain died by hanging at Le Chambard, a luxurious hotel in Kayserberg. He also added “at this stage, nothing suggests the intervention of a third party.”

Anthony Bourdain Cause of Death

The toxicology report for Anthony Bourdain revealed that he had no narcotics in his system at the time of his death. The Times reported that there was only a ‘trace of a nonnarcotic medicine in a therapeutic dose’ in his system.

Christian de Rocquigney de Fayel, French prosecucutor, said that there was no evidence of foul play or violence involved in Bourdain’s death as medical experts did not find any signs of violence on Bourdain’s body.

Anthony had previously struggled with drug abuse in the 1980’s to a point of skimming his carpet for paint chips and smoking them, hoping they were remnants of crack. In the early 1990’s he entered rehab but continued to drink both on and off screen with no issues.

“I was a heroin addict, for sure, and I was a cocaine addict, for sure, but I never stopped drinking. I never was a person who needed a drink. I’ve never felt the urge to. When I’m home it would never occur to me to sit at my house and drink beer, or pour myself a cocktail.” Anthony told People magazine.

His passion for food was kindled when he tried his first oyster on an oyster fisherman’s boat while in France on a family vacation. He worked in Provincetown, Massachusetts, seafood restaurants while in college before he dropped out. This sparked his decision to pursue cooking as a career. He joined the Culinary Institute of America and graduated in 1978.

After graduation he run various restaurant kitchens in New York City including the Supper Club, One Fifth Avenue and Sullivan’s. In 1998 he became executive chef at Brasserie Les Halles, based in Manhattan. It has other branches in Miami, Washington, D.C., and Tokyo, Japan. He left the restaurant but maintained a close relationship and in 2014 the restaurant described him as their ‘Chef-at-large’. After bankruptcy, Les Halles closed in 2017.

In January 2002 his show ‘A Cook’s Tour’ premiered in the Food Network. His memoir Kitchen Confidential was the one that led to the offer. The show ran for 35 episodes, through 2003.

In July 2005 he premiered Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations, on the Travel Channel. Due to the shows popularity ‘Kitchen Confidfential’ a Fox Sitcom aired in 2005, with the character  “Jack Bourdain” based loosely on Anthony’s biography and persona.

In July 2011 Travel Channel announced a second one-hour ten-episode Bourdain show to be titled The Layover, which premiered November 21, 2011 and ran for 20 episodes until February 2013.

In May 2012 he announced that he was leaving the Travel Channel, in his blog he explained his departure saying that he was frustrated by the channel’s new ownership as they used his voice and image to make it seem as if he was endorsing a car brand and the channel’s creating three “special episodes” consisting solely of clips from the seven official episodes of that season.

Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown

On 14th April 2013 he premiered his new show, ‘Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown’ on CNN, the show focuses on other cuisines, cultures and politics. His last episode will, which he was shooting at the time of his death, will air on 11th November 2018 on CNN. It will premier on 24th October at the Food Film Festival in New York.

The show had previously featured president Barack Obama in September 2016. The show had been set in places such as Libya, Tokyo, Punjab, Jamaica, Ethiopia, and Nigeria as of 2017.

Anthony later married Ottavia Busia on 20th April 2007 but the couple split amicably in 2016. Anthony revealed that he had been away from his wife and child for about 250 days a year working on his television shows which led to a strain in their marriage. At the time of Bourdain’s death their divorce was not finalized which means that Busia is legally his next of kin.

Anthony was previously married to his high school sweetheart, Nancy Putkosk, in 1995 but they divorced in 2005 after 20 years in marriage.

Anthony Bourdain Daughter

In 2007 Anthony’s daughter, with then wife Ottavia Busia, Ariane was born. After Anthony’s death his will written in 2016 stated that most of his finances were left to his daughter. The will also stated that if Ariane had died before her father his finances would have gone to Myra Quizon, her nanny.

The court will have to appoint a guardian to protect Ariane’s interest in his father’s estate as she is a minor. Meanwhile the executor of the estate will be Ottavia Busia, Ariane’s mother.

Anthony Bourdain and Asia Argento

In 2017 he began dating Italian actress Asia Argento. Bourdain and Asia first met in 2016 while filming his CNN show Parts Unknown.
