Chesley Sullenberger is a retired American Air Force fighter pilot and airline captain. He is famously known for role as a pilot in command in the 2009 ditching of US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River off Manhattan. This was after both engines were disabled by a bird strike everyone in the plane survived.
Chesley is also a speaker on aviation safety and has developed new protocols for airline safety. He retired from US Airways after 30 years as a commercial pilot on March 3rd, 2010. After he was hired as by CBS as an aviation and safety expert. Chesley is the author of New York Best Seller Highest Duty My Search for What Really Matters which is a memoir of his life and the events surrounding Flight 1549. It was published in 2009 by Harper Collins.

Chesley Sullenberger Flight 1549 | Crash Landing
On January 15th, 2009 Chesley was the captain of the US Airways Flight 1549 which was taking off from LaGuardia Airport in New York City. Shortly after takeoff the plane struck a flock of Canadian geese and lost power to both engines. Chesley quickly determined that they wouldn’t be able to reach LaGuardia or Teterboro airport. He piloted the plane to a crash landing on the Hudson River. All the 155 passenger s survived and were rescued.
