Clarke spent his early life on a farm outside Gisborne and boarded at Palmerston North Boys’ High School aged 11 years old. He matriculated at Otago University to study for a Bachelor of Arts later on in 1995 before being transferred to the New Zealand Broadcasting School in Christchurch.
