Eric Moye Biography-Wikipedia

Eric Moye is a Dallas County Judge who rose to prominence after he sentenced salon owner Shelley Luther to seven days in jail and a $7,000 fine for reopening her salon despite the state’s stay-at-home orders.

Moye told Luther that she could avoid jail time is she showed remorse and closed her salon and apologized for her actions which the judge thought to selfish. Luther openly said that she could not comply asking the judge why he thought of her actions as selfish yet she was making efforts to feed her family.

After his decision toi send Luther to prison Moye was greatly criticized by many including from Gov. Greg Abbott and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. According to the Newyork Times, he received a letter from Paxton saying :

I find it outrageous and out of touch that during this national pandemic, a judge, in a county that actually released hardened criminals for fear of contracting COVID-19, would jail a mother for operating her hair salon in an attempt to put food on her family’s table.

He was First appointed as a judge in 1992 by Gov. Ann Richards and as Judge of the 101st Judicial District Court. In November 2008 he was elected to the 14th Judicial District Court of Texas in Dallas County. As a Judge in Texas Moye has presided over more than 1,000 cases in matters of personal injuries, commercial and civil cases.
