Gabrielle Giffords is an American retired politician as well as a gun control advocate. She is well-known as the wife of Mark Kelly, an American politician, serving as the junior United States senator from Arizona since 2020.

A man ran up to the crowd and began firing a 9mm pistol with a 33-round magazine. The man ended up hitting 19 people and killing six. Among them were federal judge John Roll and 9-year-old child Christina-Taylor Green, who was the granddaughter of MLB baseball manager and GM Dallas Green.

A 20th person was injured at the scene, but not by gunfire. The shooter who was later known as Jared Lee Loughner was detained by bystanders until he was taken into police custody

Gabrielle Giffords Recovery

Giffords initially was placed in an induced coma to allow her brain to rest after she was shot in the head. She was able to respond to simple commands when periodically awakened, but was unable to speak as she was on a ventilator. On January 12, President Barack Obama visited Giffords at the medical center.

Gabrielle underwent cranioplasty surgery on May 18, 2011, to replace the part of her skull that had been removed.

On October 25, 2011, Gabrielle moved to Asheville, North Carolina, for intensive rehabilitation treatments, ending November 4. In Kelly’s memoir, Gabby: A Story of Courage and Hope, released in November 2011, he reported that Giffords would return to Congress.
