Gareth Cliff began his career as a Radio DJ in 1996 at Tusks Radio. He worked as a producer at Talk Radio 702 for a year (1998 – 1999). In 2001 he became a DJ on Talk Radio 702.
On 26th September 2009 his talk show, ‘The Fareth Cliff Show’, premiered on M-Net. The show run just for one season, 23 episodes, but it was not renewed for a second season.
He joined 5FM, SABC, in 2013 but he left the station in March 2014. “After two suspensions and several close-shaves, dozens of Broadcasting Complaints Commission of SA complaints and almost as many management changes at the SABC, it’s time to get unhinged,”
Gareth Cliff Idols (SA)
Gareth Cliff joined Idols in 2003 during the second season as a judge. He held the position until January 2016 when he was fired.
In January 2016 he was fired from Idols after a comment he made in response to Penny Sparrow’s racist comments over the new year. Gareth covered the incidence on his social media platforms and social media exploded when he made the following comment in response to a poll about freedom of speech: “People don’t understand free speech at all.”
He received death threats and people threatened to boycott him and Idols which prompted him to apologise on 5th January saying.
“I’ve been an insensitive asshole many times. This whole saga with the idiotic comments of Penny Sparrow has upset me, but I must acknowledge the pain and anger of so many on Twitter who thought I would in any way condone the things she said. If you thought I was on the side of a rascist, I assumed we were already in agreement about how you can’t stand up FOR racism. If I didn’t make that clear, I apologise – sincerely. With regard to free speech and hate speech, I need to continue my education.”
On 8th January 2016 M-Net announced that Gareth Cliff would not be part of the judging panel for Idols SA Season 12.
‘Over the last few months following Unathi’s indiscretions on social media, we have been in discussions with our judges, presenters and talent to sensitise them to the risks of using social media. All the Idols SA judges were reminded that M-Net holds all brand ambassadors and employees to the highest standards in our ongoing efforts to promote and build a modern and inclusive South Africa.
Unfortunately we then had to deal with Somizi’s inappropriate comments and following the latest issue, we have now implemented a zero tolerance policy for all social media posts that go against the spirit of nation-building. This policy will apply to everyone associated with our brands going forward.
We do not believe that Gareth is a racist but his response showed a lack of empathy for our history and it is important to differentiate between freedom of speech and hate speech. Penny Sparrow’s comments were hateful. Hate speech is not applicable with regard to freedom of speech.’
Gareth Cliff Cliff Central
On 1st May 2014 Gareth Cliff launched Cliff Central.com which is an online radio station via WeChat mobile app. The stream is uncensored and free from Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa (BCCSA) complaints.

Gareth Cliff Wife
Gareth Cliff keeps his personal life very private, we are not sure if he has a wife but in 2015 during an interview with channel 24 he revealed that he had been single for two years.
“I’m really happy. There have been some in and out interest – brief infatuations – but I’m not settling down any time soon.”
Gareth has been very outspoken about not having a desire to have kids but he revealed that he wasn’t totally opposed to kids.
“I reserve the right to change my mind. I have a nephew who I love. I could adopt, yes. But right now I don’t want the responsibility. Children are expensive and as a parent you have to put everything else second. Before that, I’d want to get my business up and running, sort out the stuff about me in my head, and do all the crazy stuff you want to do.”
