James Monsees is an American businessman. He is a co-founder and chief product officer of JUUL Labs, an American electronic cigarette company. In March 2020 he stepped down as the company’s adviser and board member.

James Monsees Juul Founder
James cofounded Juul Labs with Adam Bowen in 2015. Juul is an electronic cigarette company that makes the Juul e-cigarette, which packages nicotine salts from leaf tobacco into one-time use cartridges. It became the most popular e-cigarette in the United States at the end of 2017 and has a market share of 72% as of September 2018.
Monsees and Adam began working on an e-cigarette called the Ploom when they were both studying product design at Stanford University and in 2007, started a company by the same name. In 2015, the company changed its name to Pax Labs and developed a new device, the Juul. Juul Labs spun out as a separate company in 2017.
Juul’s main reason is to help adult smokers quit conventional cigarettes. The firm however faced criticism for allegedly hooking kids on vaping. In November 2019 New York sued Juul for deceptive advertising. The lawsuit alleged that the company downplayed health risks and “significantly contributed to the public health crisis that has left youth in New York and across the country addicted to its products.” The company was also sued by North Carolina over its advertising practices, and the Federal Trade Commission is investigating Juul over its use of influencers in marketing.
Monsees defended the company in a congressional hearing arguing that it “never wanted any non-nicotine users, and certainly not anyone underage” — but also acknowledging that the company had made “missteps.”
James Monsees Steps Down
According to BuzzFeed News James was stepping down from his roles as Juul’s adviser and board member. They reported that according to a company’s memo sent on Thursday afternoon Monsees wrote;
“After 15 years on this tremendous journey, it is with a great deal of thought and consideration that I have decided it is time for me to move on from JUUL Labs and step down from our Board. These many years have been incredible, and I did not make this decision lightly.”
Monsees added that he had recently gotten married and was “looking forward to spending more time with my family and pursuing other interests both personally and professionally.”
