Jesse Clegg Biography

Jesse Clegg is a South African singer-songwriter and the son of South African musician and anthropologist Johnny Clegg who died on July 16, 2019 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He is also an official ambassador for the Nelson Mandela 46664 Foundation.

Jesse released his first album ‘When I Wake Up’ in 2011. After the critical acclaim of his first album, he caught the attention of Canadian record producer David Bottrill. He moved to Toronto for four months to work on his second album, Life on Mars, with Bottrill.

In 2014 he toured across the United States and Canada on a seven-week tour. He has also played numerous high-profile showcase festivals in the US – including the CMJ Music Marathon New Music Seminar, and the CBGB Festival.

In June 2016 he released his third album titled ‘Things Unseen’. The first single “Use Me”, was released in July 2015 which reached the No. 1 spot on several stations. It remained in the iTunes Top 40 for three months.

Jesse’s father is Johnny Clegg who was a South African musician and activist who was awarded the Order of Ikhamanga from the South African government in 2012. He was a founding member of Juluka and Savuka bands.

Jesse died on July 16, 2019 after a long battle with cancer his death was confirmed by Roddy Quin, his manager through a statement which said;

“It is with immense sadness that we confirm that Jonathan (Johnny) Clegg, OBE OIS, succumbed to pancreatic cancer at the age of 66 on the afternoon of 16 July 2019 at his family home in Johannesburg. Johnny leaves deep footprints in the hearts of every person that considers him/herself to be an African. He showed us what it was to assimilate to and embrace other cultures without losing your identity. With his unique style of music he traversed cultural barriers like few others.

In many of us he awakened awareness. His passing has left us numb and we request that the family’s privacy be respected during this trying time. The family will be holding a private funeral service and we ask you to please respect the families wishes. There will be a service for public to pay their respects and the details hereof will be announced in due course.”

The government released a tribute statement on Twitter which said; “Condolences to family and friends of Johnny Clegg -one of South Africa’s most celebrated sons. He was a singer, a songwriter, a dancer, anthropologist whose infectious crossover music exploded onto the international scene and contributed towards social cohesion.

His music had the ability to unite people across the races and bring them together as a community. Clegg has made an indelible mark in the music industry and the hearts of the people.”
