Epstein was born and raised in Hawaii and says he is proud of his Hawaiian roots. He says being born in Hawaii makes someone grow different respect for the ocean and the land surrounded by.

“Being born and raised on an island is definitely different than most childhoods you grow different respect for the ocean and the land you’re surrounded by. We call all the elders, like all your elders older than you, aunty and uncle. So coming here and talking to my friends’ parents, and calling my friend’s mom ‘aunty’ definitely freaked them out a bit. Then hearing my friends call my mom ma’am, or Kendra, by her first name, was like shocking to me.”

Kalama Epstein Gay/ Kalama Epstein Sexuality

Kalama is not gay although during an interview in 2016 he said he preferred keeping his sexuality private at that time. He played the role of religious gay high schooler Noah on Freeform’s The Fosters. He said that his parents and family members were supportive of him playing the gay character as they are ‘a very liberal, left-wing family, so they’re all very accepting’.

When asked if he felt the role he played had any larger impact on audience considering the character was gay and religious he said:

“We haven’t really gotten to see as many openly gay characters who are also religious—Noah’s mom is a pastor—so this character, his church openly supports him. They’re very accepting. Normally these churches are depicted as very right-wing, and not accepting. So to see this kid who is openly gay, and proud of that, and can talk about this with his community, I think that’s great. I’ve gotten a lot of messages from kids saying they’ve never seen this before, and this character is really helping them. Which is very heartwarming and incredible.”
