Lee Dingle was the president of Atlas Engineering in Raleigh who died on a North Carolina beach July 19, 2019 when a huge wave broke his neck. He was the husband of Shannon Dingle, who is an American Christian writer and activist and a contributor to USA Today, Teen Vogue and the Washington Post.

Lee was married to Shannon Dingle, the two have dated since he was 19 and Shannon was 18. Shannon is a writer, activist and sex trafficking survivor. She is a contributor to USA Today, Teen Vogue and the Washington Post. Her writings on life, race, and disability first garnered widespread attention leading up to the 2016 US presidential election.
She was sexually abused as a child, becoming pregnant at the age of 12. She is a graduate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 2003 she earned the Edward Kidder Graham Award for her leadership as a senior in Lutheran Campus Ministry and interfaith activities.
After the death of her husband, Shannon wrote on her blog that the two met when she was 18 and Dingle was 19 and have been together ever since.
“We met when I was 18 and he was 19, and we’ve been together ever since. I wasn’t supposed to be saying goodbye at 37. I don’t know how to be a grown-up without him, but I’ll learn. I just wish I didn’t have to. If you didn’t know him, I’m sorry. You missed out. As you hear people share stories, you’ll find, ‘no person can be that wonderful,’ but? He really and truly was.”

On the profile on the company’s website reads; “Lee has extensive experience with the analysis of existing structures, repair design, upgrade/reinforcement details, platforms, cranes/hoists, materials handling systems, and concrete repairs. Lee’s private sector clients include manufacturing, research, and pharmaceutical companies. He also works with federal, state, and local government agencies and university systems. He is a collapse rescue engineer with NC Emergency Management and North Carolina USAR TF8 emergency response team.”

On July 18, 2019 while on the beach with three of his kids he was hit by an intense wave which slammed his head into the sand, breaking his neck. This made his throat swell so much that his brain was deprived of oxygen for too long to recover. He died on July 19, 2019.
His death was confirmed by his wife, Shannon, who wrote on her blog; “My partner, my love, and my home died Friday, July 19, after a freak accident. Lee was playing in the waves at the beach with three of our kids Thursday, July 18, and an intense wave hit him just right to slam his head into the sand, break his neck, and make his throat swell so much his brain was deprived of oxygen for too long to recover. Some heroes – including our kids – tried to save him, but it wouldn’t have mattered what they did. His body couldn’t recover from the initial injury.”

On July 19, 2019 a Go Fund Me page was created to help pay for ‘funeral expenses and need some time to get their feet under them- this means they need financial support.’ At the time of publication, the page had raised over $157,000 of $200,000 goal.
