Masculinity and sexuality


Masculinity is a concept that exists in all societies and communities in the world. It is the characteristic traditionally associated with men. Some of the qualities associated with masculinity include strength, vigor, roughness, and aggression. Based on that definition, masculinity refers to the manifestation of gender roles related to males.

However, there is no standard definition of masculinity because of the differences in communities. In his study, Beynon indicate that masculinity is an interpolation of cultural history and geography of a people. This proposition suggests that the perception of masculinity differs across various cultures and societies because it is dependent on the gender role associated with sex. Consequently, different communities may clash over the qualities that enable determination of masculinity qualities. Different cultures grant members of the different sexes differently and hence renders it impossible to have a uniform exhibition of masculinity.

Despite the differences, many cultures reveal similar characteristics related to masculinity. Femininity is a social concept associated with the characteristics traditionally identified with women. Some of these qualities include gentleness, weakness kindness and calm. Likewise, femininity cannot be determined with a standard code because the roles of women differed from one culture to another similar to men. In fact, Freud relates femininity with the quality of been passive.Therefore, femininity is a social quality associated with aspects of femininity. As a result, even men are identified with femininity based on the merits they present towards society. Based on the discussion, the concept of femininity reveals that these are qualities perceived in society and does not reflect any scientific truth. Nevertheless, the quality depends on how the organization traditionally viewed women and the roles they were assigned. Lastly, femininity may differ across cultures because it is specific to communities and cultures.

Sexuality is an aspect of life which explain how individuals express their sexual experiences. It is a broad concept which encompasses the biological, emotional physical and social behaviors associated with the sexual expedition. The term may be confused for sex but should not because it involves feelings, thoughts, and actions towards other people. For that reason, sexuality is personal and represent an essential marker of identity. Hence, there are numerous types of sexuality which is defined by the sex of partners attracted to an individual. Based on that understanding individuals can be attracted to men women or partners of both sexes. Some of the most prominent aspects of sexuality include heterosexualism, intersexual, transgender, asexual and bisexuality. Sexuality can change over time and therefore does not define an individual because it depends on a personal affiliation and attitudes towards gender and sex.
