Matt Gutman is an American media personality who reports for ABC News. He is the network’s Chief National Correspondent and appears on various programs for the network. In January 2020 he was suspended by the network for incorrectly reporting that Kobe Bryant died in a helicopter accident along with all her four daughters.

Matt began his career as a freelance reporter in Argentina in late 2000. His First published article was for the now-defunct English language Buenos Aires daily. He then joined Jerusalem Post based in Israel in 2001 where he covered the Israeli-Palestinian conflict until 2005. He also worked for USA Today.

Matt joined ABC News Radio in 2006. He lived in the Middle East for nearly eight years, covering most major conflicts, including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Syria and Lebanon, and filing dispatches nearly every country in the region.

In 2008 Matt joined ABC News, after moving to Miami, Florida, he began appearing on various programs and platforms for the network including GoodMorning America (2010-2018), Nightline (2013-2014), 20/20 (2012-2016) and World News Tonight with David Muir (2011-2018). He also hosted  Sea Rescue

He has reported for ABC from 40 countries across the globe. His reporting on “20/20” helped win an Emmy for its documentary on the 2017 Las Vegas massacre and a Christopher Award for its reporting on the Thai cave rescue. In 2014 he began hosting Sea Rescue, where he hosted 120 episodes. He is the network’s Chief National Correspondent.

Matt Gutman Suspended

On January 29, 2019 Matt was suspended for an inaccurate statement he made on-air Sunday following the death of Kobe Bryant. He reported that all four of Bryant’s children were on board the helicopter that crashed on a hillside in Calabasas, California, on Sunday. In a Twitter statement on Sunday, Matt corrected the error and apologized.

On January 28, Matt again apologized in a statement that read; “We are in the business of holding people accountable. And I hold myself accountable for a terrible mistake, which I deeply regret. I want to personally apologize to the Bryant family for this wrenching loss and any additional anguish my report caused.”
