Greller told the Caddie Network; “A whole flood of tears came out at that point. My dad was the best human being I’ve ever known. My mom and him were married 50 years. It’s been hard for her and our whole family these last few months. As I was up there with my wife, Ellie, I kept thinking about my mom and just what joy it’ll bring her to know dad was honored by my fellow caddies and AT&T. AT&T has been phenomenal to myself and my wife the last seven years.”

Caddie Michael Greller

According to Brian Costa of The Wall Street Journal Michael Greller caddied for the first time in 2006. At the time he was watching the US Amateur Public Links Championship as a spectator but decided to hop across the ropes and caddie for a kid who was carrying his own bags.

Greller continued caddying as a hobby until 2011 when he found himself as Jordan Spieth caddie in the US Junior Amateur. In 2013, when Spieth turned pro he asked Greller to leave his real job and work for him.

Jordan Spieth and Michael Greller

Greller carried Justin Thomas’ bag at the 2010 U.S. Thomas connected Greller with Spieth ahead of the 2011 U.S. Junior Amateur, which Spieth won. During the 2012 U.S. Open Spieth asked Greller to carry his bag again. In 2013 when Spieth turned pro he asked Greller to leave his teaching job and work for him.

During an interview with Jason Sobel of the Golf Channel in 2013 Greller said he initially intended to take a one-year sabbatical from school but while watching the 2013 Masters, he decided he did not want to give up an opportunity to help Spieth win a green jacket one day.

“I loved what I did, but I was ready to try something different. Ellie, my wife, was watching the Masters with me in the spring. She said, ‘If Jordan is winning the Masters in 10 years, are you going to be like, why didn’t I pursue that?’ I know I’d be kicking myself.”

Greller has helped Spieth during some of his toughest spots of his career. For example at the Open Championship in 2017 when Spieth’s drive went way off course, and he was forced to take relief in the driving range, Greller gave what legendary caddie Jim “Bones” Mackay would call arguably, “The most critical yardage ever given to a player in the history of golf.”

Greller estimated two distances for Spieth and helped him aim his shot, which Spieth hit amazingly to save a bogey on the hole and win the tournament. Bones claimed it was “One of the most amazing things a caddie has ever done.”

Michael Greller Called Out by Jordan Spieth During The U.S. Open 2019

On June 13, 2019 during the 2019 U.S Open Jordan called out Michael during the first round after a a pair of poor shots from Spieth. Spieth’s tee shot rolled out through the fairway and off the cliff into the penalty area beyond. He then took a drop, and his third shot missed the green long.

He was captured on live TV telling Michael; “Two perfect shots, Michael. You got me in the water on one and over the green on the other.”

After the round Spieth told the reports;

“We were talking about potentially one less club on the third shot and I said, ‘But isn’t it playing about 60 with a fade?’And then [Greller] said yes. So we both agreed on that. It was clearly a 4-iron off the tee. At the same time, when you hit a couple of shots exactly where you want to, and the first one is in the water and the next one is dead over the green, I’m going to be frustrated that as a team we didn’t figure out how to make sure that didn’t happen.

Yeah, I may have looked like the bad guy there, but my intentions were that we should be in play if the ball is hit solidly, and I was out of play on both shots.”

Greller on his part seemed unbothered, when asked about it by ESPN’s Michael Collins, he said: “What exchange? What did he say? I don’t remember.”
