Grafton E. Thomas has been identified as the suspect who stormed into a rabbi’s home and stabbed five people as they celebrated Hanukkah in an Orthodox Jewish community north of New York City on December 28, 2019.

Grafton is a resident at Lake Drive in Greenwood Lake. According to public records he lives in a house that has been owned by a relative since 2001. He previously lived in Brooklyn, New York.

Grafton Thomas Stabbing

On Saturday night, December 28, at around 10 p.m. Grafton Thomas entered Rabbi Rottenburg’s synagogue on Forshay Road in Monsey and stabbed five people. It is reported that Thomas entered the building covering his face with a scarf and pulled out a machete to attack the victims during a Chanukah celebration. He reportedly chased after and stabbed victims as they fled the synagogue before running off and escaping in a gray Nissan Sentra.

A witness told CBS2’s Marc Liverman; “He took out his knife, sword from a holder and started hitting people back and forth. Nothing, he didn’t say anything. He screamed after me when I came out here, he screamed after me, ‘Hey you, I’ll get you.’ e moved to the front door. He could go straight into the kitchen and the dining room’s the first thing. First, he went into the dining room and hit a few people there. Then he went into the kitchen and hit one guy there, and then he came back to the dining room.”

It is reported that a total of five people were stabbed with at least our people taken to area hospitals with injuries. Two of the victims were rushed to Westchester Medical’s trauma center due to the severity of injuries.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Sunday morning said that one of the victims was still in “very serious and critical condition with wounds to the head.”

The rabbi’s son was also one of the victims of the attack. The rabbi told Cuomo his son is recovering. Officials said around 9:40 a.m. Sunday that two victims were still in the hospital, but their exact conditions are unknown.

Grafton Thomas Arrest

Ramapo police announced that Thomas was arrested shortly after midnight on Sunday. He was taken to custody in Harlem. The Ramapo Police Chief Brad Weidel said they were able to apprehend him as a witness saw him fleeing in a car and alerted police to the license plate number. Police entered that information into a database and used plate reader technology to track the vehicle to Manhattan.

The arresting officers said that Thomas had blood all over his clothing, smelled of bleach but said “almost nothing” when officers stopped him.

Grafton Thomas Charges

Thomas was arraigned Sunday afternoon in Ramapo town court on five counts of attempted murder and one count of burglary. Justice Rhoda Schoenberger ordered Thomas held on $5 million bail. He was ordered to return to court January 3.

Grafton Thomas Mental Illness

Rev. Wendy Paige, the family’s pastor, revealed that Thomas has been suffering from mental illness and that his family believes that condition was the cause of the alleged stabbings — not hatred toward Jewish people. She said his family is sorry for the pain he has caused.

It is not clear if Grafton is Muslim or not. The attack and the recent wave of anti-Semitic violence in the region drew condemnation from various officials.

Dov Hikind, founder of Americas Against Antisemitism said; “The people that were stabbed tonight, what did they do? Did the perpetrator even know who they were, or just knew that they were Jews?”

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a tweet; “We will NOT allow this to become the new normal. We’ll use every tool we have to stop these attacks once and for all. The NYPD has deployed a visible and growing presence around Jewish houses of worship on the streets in communities like Williamsburg, Crown Heights and Boro Park.”

Rockland County Executive Ed Day said in a statement Saturday night; “Violence of any kind will not be tolerated here in Rockland. I stand with the people of this County in condemning this attack and ask all to offer their thoughts, hopes and prayers for a speedy recovery for the victims of this heinous crime. As a former Police Commander, people need to know that law enforcement in Rockland will leave no stone un-turned as they bring those guilty of this crime to swift and severe justice.”

Grafton Thomas Prior Convictions

Grafton was once accused of punching a police horse and that’s just one of several past arrests on his record according to Daily Beast. His lawyer, however, told the court he has no criminal record although he was accused of “menacing and reckless endangerment charges” last summer in Greenwood Lake, but “those charges were to be dismissed if he avoided legal trouble.”

She, however, said that he had “a conviction for a driving-related offense.” She added that Thomas has been arrested twice in his life.
