Born as Irving Joel Gikofsky Mr. G is an American Emmy Awards and an Edward R. Murrow Award-winning meteorologist currently working as PIX11’s weatherman at 5, 6, and 10.Before, he was a teacher and he also created New York City school system’s first computerized weather program for use by children besides their teachers. Later on, he retired and became a WCBS-TV News reporter in 1997.

He kicked off his media career at Albert Einstein Intermediate School in the Bronx as a school teacher. later on, as a researcher, he developed the first computerized weather software for use by children and their teachers in the New York City school system. In 1977 he was hired right out of the classroom after teaching in high school for a decade to become a TV weatherman at New York’s WCBS-TV. Later he joined WPIX as a weekday weatherman in September 1993. During his tenure there he received five Emmy Awards and an Edward R. Murrow Award.

He is also the recipient of the Friar’s Club Life Time Achievement Award which was awarded to him in 2008 by Mike Wallace. He has personally toured over 500 schools to date.

Currently, he serves as a meteorologist on PIX11’s for 5, 6, and 10 newscasts. Having joined the station in 1993 as the weekday weatherman he has won numerous awards. June 30th was proclaimed “Mr. G day” in the Bronx for his motivational work with children. Additionally, he is a board member for the R Baby Foundation and works to improve pediatric care in emergency rooms in the tri-state area.

He has a deep love for collaborating with students having toured more than 500 schools to date, in particular, lower-income areas. There he talks in classrooms (not only about the weather but also motivationally) and aims to attend at least one school a week while classes are in session.

He has always taken part in New York City’s “Principal for a Day” scheme every year since its inception. He calls the day “homework and test-free” and still get a standing ovation!. Furthermore, he is a member of the R Baby Foundation and serves in the tri-state region to optimize pediatric services in emergency rooms

As a “Professional in Residence” he G continues his series of lectures at his alma mater Hofstra University covering talks on radio and TV broadcasting. For his educational background, he graduated from Hofstra with a Master of Arts in Secondary Education and completed doctoral studies at Yeshiva University.

Gikofsky is married to his wife Deborah Lynn Quan, a financial manager in capital and sales planning for CBS. The couple tied the knot on May 24, 1987, 7, at St. Paul’s Chapel of Columbia University. The wedding was led by Rev. H. Scott Matheney, a Presbyterian minister who is a Columbia chaplain.
