Noa Pothoven Euthanasia/ Noa Pothoven Eutanasia
Noa sort euthenisia in 2018 but was rejected. The Netherlands legalized euthanasia in 2001. The country allows children from 12 through 16 to kill themselves with permission from a parent, and if a doctor agrees that their suffering is unbearable and likely to continue. At the age of 17 children no longer need their parents consent.
Noa was denied permission because the doctors thought that she should complete trauma treatment and that her brain should be fully developed before making such a decision.
In 2018 she was admitted to the Rijnstate Hospital in Arnhem seriously underweight and with near-organ failure. She was put in a coma and fed with tubes. Noa described the experience of forced feeding as “humiliating” and “degrading”.
According to reports in Holland, medics last week agreed to no longer attempt to feed the teenager. She was instead provided with palliative care in a hospital bed set up in her living room. Her case sometimes is referred to as “passive euthanasia” as treatment was withheld.
Noa Pothoven Raped/ Noa Pothoven Rape
Noa was raped at the age of 14 by two men in the Elderveld neighbourhood of the city and had previously been sexually assaulted at a friend’s party at the age of 11. She never revealed the abuse for years as she said it left her feeling ashamed.
She revealed in her autobiography that she relived the fear and the pain everyday. “I relive the fear, that pain every day. Always scared, always on my guard. And to this day my body still feels dirty.”
According to De Gelderlander her parents had no idea that she was tortured mentally until her mom found a plastic envelope in her room around the same time filled with farewell letters to them and friends.
“I was in shock. We didn’t get it. Noa is sweet, beautiful, smart, social and always cheerful. How is it possible that she wants to die? We have never received a real answer.”
Noa Pothoven Story
After Noa was raped she battled post-traumatic stress and anorexia which led to her sought to end her life through euthanasia. She contacted the Life End Clinic in The Hague without her parents’ knowledge but she was rejected.
According to Paul Bolwerk, who reports for the local newspaper the Gelderlander Nora got more depressed and opted to stop treatment.
“She got depressed more and more, and said, ‘Well, OK, now I press on the button. Now I say I will stop with all treatments.’ ”
He also added that her family attempted to get her electroconvulsive therapy, but it was denied because she was a minor. He also added that during the last months she had severally attempted to commit suicide.
“During the last months, she had undertaken several attempts to commit suicide.”
Noa posted a message on her Instagram page revealing her decision to die. She wrote;
“I deliberated for quite a while whether or not I should share this, but decided to do it anyway. Maybe this comes as a surprise to some, given my posts about hospitalization, but my plan has been there for a long time and is not impulsive. I will get straight to the point: within a maximum of 10 days I will die.”
She revealed that she made the decision after “battling” mental anguish for most of her life. She continued: “After years of battling and fighting, I am drained. “I have quit eating and drinking for a while now, and after many discussions and evaluations, it was decided to let me go because my suffering is unbearable.”
She also added that while she was “alive” she felt as if she was merely surviving, writing: “I breathe, but I no longer live.”
In her post, she asked her friends to “’not convince me that this is not good, this is my decision and it is final. Love is letting go, in this case.”

The Ministry of Health also released a statement on Thursday (June 6, 2019) which read;
‘We are all deeply moved by the death of Noa at 17 years of age, and our hearts go out to her family and friends. We are in touch with her family, who have told us that, despite international media reports to the contrary, there is no question of euthanasia in this case. The family must now be allowed to grieve for Noa in peace. Questions about her death and the care she has received are understandable, but can only be answered once the facts have been established. I have asked the Health and Youth Care Inspectorate (IGJ) to look into this.” The Dutch Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport, Hugo de Jonge, said.
