Robert Marawa Biography

Robert Marawa is a South African sports journalist and television and radio personality. He is the former host of Thursday Night Live with Marawa on SuperSport. Despite studying Law Marawa joined the media as a presenter in 1996 at SABC1 where he worked for two years. He later worked as the anchor of a live soccer show called Laduma.

He, later on, started hosting Soccerzone, a football highlights show which airs on Mondays on SABC1 channel. He also hosted Discovery Sports Centre on weekdays, between 18:00 and 19:00 which airs on Metro FM, a SABC radio station. He also hosted the Blow by Blow a boxing show by SABC2.

Robert had a big break in 2006 when he went to Germany to host the FIFA World Cup. In the same year, he hosted the People’s Celebration Concern. In 2017 he left SABC TV and joined SuperSport although he didn’t quite his show on Matro FM.

Robert has two siblings; sisters Guru Marawa and Vanessa Marawa. Gugu Marawa served as the deputy manager in the South African Senior Men’s National Football Team (Bafana Bafana). She also served in the Lamontville Golden Arrows as the manager for a short period. Vanessa Marawa competed and won the Survivor South Africa: Panama.

Robert is unmarried although he was in a relationship with actress Zoey Mthiyane who is popular for her role in Generations: The Legacy. She has also featured in The Lion King, Disney Theatrical Productions, where she is an actor and singer.  The two had a son together but they separated although its not clear whether they were married or not.

When the two separated Zoe took their son and does not acknowledge Robert’s efforts towards raising their son. Robert tried to seek legal access to their son writing;

“I acknowledge and respect your privacy, peace and tranquillity. Regardless, I am content that as the natural father, I am inclined to reasonable access to Awande. For the avoidance of protracted legal processes, I request that we attain an immediate and resolute agreement regarding the upbringing of our child. Your prompt response is anticipated within 5 days hereof.”

Zoey in response claimed that Robert was a deadbeat dad and wrote to him saying;
“I was advised to respond with my legal representatives who have since written 2 legal letters to yourself and to date, contrary to your above comments, you have not responded.”

Robert and Zoey share a son Awande born on July 18th, 2011.

Robert Marawa Pearl Thusi

Robert was engaged to South African actress, businesswoman, and model, Pearl Thusi. The two dated for a while until Pearl was spotted rocking an engagement ring. The relationship later came to an end with Robert posting about the breakup on his social media posts.

Robert also addressed the issue on East Coast Radio where he said he made the announcement to avoid negative fake stories from making the rounds.

“I never talk about my private life, but I decided to confirm it to protect both sets of families. If you don’t own your space, people can twist things and write things that are not true.”

Robert Marawa joined SuperSport in 2006 where he hosted a show, Thursday Night Live with Robert Marawa on Supersport 4 until he was fired on May 16, 2019. He also has a show on Metro FM; Sports@6 with Robert Marawa.

Robert Marawa SuperSport Salary

Robert signed a contract with SuperSport in which he earned R154000 monthly. He also receives an annual salary of R1.8 million.

Robert Marawa Fired

On May 16, 2019, Robert Marawa announced that he was fired through a text by SuperSport. He insinuated that the dismissal was connected to allegations of sexual harassment within SuperSport ranks that he spoke up about.

He told his followers on Twitter that he was told less than two hours before the start of his show on SuperSport 4 through an SMS not to show up for work.

His co-host Thato Moeng presented the show by herself and repeatedly told viewers that it was suddenly “the last show”. It was unclear whether she meant the end of the entire show or the end of the show being connected to Marawa.

SuperSport released a statement which read; “SuperSport is in the process of an exciting refresh of its local presenter line-up, which will be unveiled as part of our new football season campaign.

This restructure includes us not pursuing our contractual relationship with Robert Marawa. Robert was personally advised of our decision earlier this week. We are grateful for his contribution over the years and wish him great success in his future endeavours.”

Marawa had earlier alluded to unhappiness in the workplace via a tweet which read; “Imagine paying for a service where people who are guilty of sexual harassment are employed and encouraged to work”.

When viewers wanted to know what happened he tweeted; “One day u will ALL know. It will cost me my life but you will know. The Mafia! Incorporated with lackeys. An amazing story.”

In July 2017 he was fired from the SABC and was later rehired. He was previously also fired from SoccerZone on SABC1.
