Sanaa McCoy Lathan popularly known as Sanaa Lathan is an American actress  born on 19th September 1971 in New York City, U.S. Her first name ‘Sanaa‘ means “artistry” in Swahili and “shining light” in Arabic.

Her mother Eleanor McCoy, was an actress and dancer and performed on Broadway. Her father, Stan Lathan, was a producer and director. He produced shows such as Sanford & Son and Russell Simmons’ Def Comedy Jam. Her parents divorced while she was still young. She has a brother Tendaji Lathan who is a popular DJ.

She began her career in acting while at Yale university and performed in a number of Shakespeare’s plays, Lathan earned acclaim both off- Broadway and on the Los Angeles stage.

She gained television roles on episodes of television shows such as In the House, Family Matters, NYPD Blue, and Moesha. She won raves and a Best Actress nod from the Los Angeles NAACP Theatrical Award Committee for her performance in To Take Arms.

In 1998 she became popular for her role as the mother of Wesley Snipestitle character in Blade. She went on to feature in many television shows and movies.

In 2001 she won a NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture, as well as an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Actress and a BET Award for her performance in Love & Basketball.

In 2004 she received a Tony Award nomination for Best Performance by a Featured Actress for her portrayal of Beneatha Younger on Broadway in A Raisin in the Sun.

‘Yet there’s this whole idea that if you’re a single woman that somehow you cannot keep a man or something. The truth is, I’m really happy. It’s not like there are people who wouldn’t want to be with me. But I have worked so hard to create this life and I’m in a pretty good place. If I have a partner to walk through life that would be great, But if that doesn’t happen, I feel great. I have great friends and great family. I have fun.’

Sanaa has no children but in 2015 she fell vitim to a pregnancy hoax. A photo of her cradling her belly surfaced in the media and the rumor mill took it as pregnancy. It was speculated that the father of the child was French Montana, being the last celebrity boyfriend of Lathan at that time. The actress took to social media to shut down the rumour mill.

In December 2017 during a Jay-Z concert after party Beyonce was reportedly bit by an actress and this was revealed by Tiffany Haddish in March 2018 during an interview with GQ magazine. She told the magazine that she was nearly arrested at the concert after party for trying to fight an actress who bite Beyonce.

Tiffany told the publication she wanted to retaliate, but was told by Queen Bey: ‘Tiffany, no. Don’t do that. That b**** is on drugs. She not even drunk. The b**** is on drugs. She not like that all the time. Just chill.’

Tiffany did not mention the biter but people began to speculate that it was Sanaa. She refuted the claims in a tweet saying;

On 13th June 2018 Tiffany confirmed social media suspicions that Sanaa Lathan is the person who famously bit Beyonce. She told The Hollywood Reporter she’s close with Sanaa’s family and they weren’t thrilled with the publicity.

‘I’m super good friends with her stepmom and her dad [Stan, a producer-director], and they were mad at me. They were like, “Why would you do this to the family? You know, black actresses, you guys have to stick together, it’s so hard for you guys to get work as it is, why would you try to ruin her career?” But I didn’t try to ruin her career. I never said her name! I was just trying to say how Beyonce kept me from goin’ to jail that night. I coulda just shut my whole career down.’
