Career
In 2006 Solly attended a DA event and later wrote to the party criticizing its
campaign approach. Ryan Coetzee, who is the party’s CEO, offered him a staff
position.
In 2011 he was elected to the Tshwane City Council, and the same year became
the leader of the DA’s Gauteng North region. In 2014 he was elected as a member
of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature suceeding Mike Moriarty as DA provincial
chairperson in 2015.
In September 2015 it was announced that he would vie for mayor of The City of
Tshwane on a DA party ticket. DA emerged as the largest party in the election,
but without a majority. By forming a coalition with several smaller parties,
and with the support of the Economic Freedom Fighters, Msimanga was elected as
the executive Mayor of Tshwane. He is the first DA member to hold the post.
Solly Msimanga Motion of ‘No Confidence’
On 30th August 2018 survived two bids to oust him as mayor of Tshwane mayor. The Eff and ANC tabled two separate motions of no confidence in Msimanga over a a R12-billion consultancy tender‚ which led to the suspension of city manager Moeketsi Mosola.
EFF’s motion was dismissed by the speaker of council, Katlego Matheba, who stated that it did not comply with the council’s rules. ANC later withdrew their motion.
