Somizi Mhlongo Memoir/ Book; Dominoes Unbreakable Spirit

In 2017 Somizi Mhlongo released his biography Dominoes: Unbreakable Spirit, co-written with journalist Lesley Mofokeng. The book is 112 pages, the book deals with Mhlongo’s sexuality, recounts his friendships with stars (the likes of Brenda Fassie and Lebo Mathosa), and his famous conviction for sexual assault.

Somizi Mhlongo claimed that his memoir was the best selling memoir ever but this was disputed by Exclusive Books Manager Ben Williams

“So we have just been told that my book is the highest-selling autobiography in the country ever at Exclusive Books. I wanna break the African record which was set by Harry Potter. Am I being too ambitious? No. I don’t think so, because I have God and you,” he said on Instagram.

Exclusive Books general manager Ben Willliams said although Mhlongo’s book was a hit with the readers, it was “below the numbers needed to break the record” for highest-selling biography.

“We never discuss sales with the media or even the authors so we did not notify him that his book was the highest-selling autobiography. His book did extremely well but the highest-selling autobiography was Nelson Mandela’s Long Walk to Freedom and it (Somizi’s book) was below the numbers needed to break that record,” Williams said.

He said Mhlongo’s book released two months ago, was the best-selling book across all genres for at least two weeks after its release and “even now it is still in the top three most popular titles sold by the company.”

Somizi Mhlongo Daughter

Somizi Mhlongo has a daughter, Lehlohonolo Bahumi born in February 1995, with actress Palesa Madisekwane. While some people have wondered how Somizi, who is gay and very clear about his sexual preference, has a daughter, he has spoken out about the circumstances surrounding her being conceived with his former girlfriend, Palesa Mocuminyane.

During an interview with Kaya FM, Somizi said he thought he was bisexual and was convinced he was attracted to women and men. When he met the mother of his child, he was dating a man at the time, but agreed to be in a relationship with her.

Palesa questioned his sexuality, and he told her he was bisexual, which led to them dating.

“I’ve always lived my truth. When Bahumi’s mother came to me and said, ‘I am attracted to you,’ I told her I’m bisexual. I didn’t say I am straight, I didn’t say so. I told her I have a boyfriend. And she said, ‘oh, okay, if you are bisexual, it means you date both sexes?’ and I said yes because at the time I thought I was bisexual,” he said.

Somizi Mhlongo and Bonang Matheba

Somizi Mhlongo and Bonang Matheba had been friend for long until their friendship ended in 2016. Bonang revealed the reason the friendship ended in her book, Bonang From A to B.

In a chapter focused on her alleged assault at the hands of a boyfriend in 2012, (She’s referring to Euphonik) Bonang said that the experience taught her who she could trust.

“In the end, it was one of the reasons I stopped being friends with one of my closest friends, Somizi Mhlongo, although not immediately,” she wrote.

Bonang claimed that she phoned Somizi during the alleged assault and he came to pick her up after the incident. She said she later lost trust in him when he made friends with her ex-boyfriend.

“It took me a while to eventually leave that relationship, and years after I had, Somizi, who was my friend, suddenly became friends with my ex. The same one whose violence towards me he had witnessed. That’s when I knew he had to go. I couldn’t trust him anymore so I cut him out of my life,” she revealed.

She admitted that she often would not let the person know if she was no longer friends with them and acknowledged that Somizi “didn’t even realise why” she had suddenly cut him out of her life. She said that Somizi probably thought it was about something else he had actually not even done.

Opening up about the break-up on his reality show last year, Somizi said that he thought it was because she had been told that he spoken to DJ Zinhle about Bonang’s relationship with AKA.

“What I hear is that she thinks or she was told that I told Zinhle about her relationship with AKA. But why? Why would I do that to her? I want the three of them, Zinhle, AKA and Bonang, to sit down and tell me who said that I said what,” he said.

Somizi Mhlongo Boyfriend/ Fiancee

Somizi met his boyfriend, Mohale Motaung in July 2017 at the exclusive Louis Vuitton and Moet & Chandon event at which the top 20 customers in Joburg were invited for the launch of the new champagne.

Somizi explains that during the event they spoke briefly and then later connected on social media which led to them dating.

“He’s physically attractive and is business savvy and mature. And he isn’t in the entertainment industry. I saw him as I walked into the event and was curious about him. It’s obvious that we were both sussing each other out,” the star explains.

In March 2018 during a trip to Paris they got engaged and Somizi confirmed the news to his team on Metro FM after weekend reports emerged sending the rumour mill into a frenzy. His co-hosts asked if the rumours were true.

“Yes, I did. (It was) on the ‘love lock’ bridge with the Eiffel Tower behind us. I’ve watched too many movies obviously,” Somizi said.

Somizi Mhlongo insisted that their engagement was not going to be a long one.

“I wanted to wait for the right time to tell everyone, but eish. Paparazzi. I’m not a long time engager. I’m not talking about getting engaged 7 years ago. It must be within a year-ish.”

Somizi Mhlongo illness

In his memoir he revealed that he was diagnosed with a terminal disease in 1999 and that had the capacity to take his life within six months and is incurable. He says he won’t name the illness for personal reasons.

Somizi Mhlongo apparently debated whether it was worth seeking treatment and living with the chronic illness. The 44-year-old maintains that he’s never felt the need to tell people what his ailment actually is.

“I haven’t had the courage or the need to say which one it is between cancer, HIV and diabetes.”

He was apparently told he only had a month to live, but God had “other plans” for him more than six years ago.

Somizi Mhlongo explained that by cultivating a positive mind-set he was able to rise above his affliction despite numerous days when it all felt like too much.

Somizi Mhlongo Siblings

Somizi Mhlongo has reflected on one of the most devastating experiences of his life when he lost his brother Archie and how the pain led him to not mourn properly for those close to him.

Somizi’s brother died after being stabbed at a tavern in 1985 and his death has haunted the TV personality not only because of their relationship but because he was ‘warned’ about the death hours before it happened.

Speaking on Afternoon Express, Somizi said that the morning before his brother’s death he had bumped into a friend who had told him that Archie had died.

“That morning I woke up to buy fatcakes. There was a queue. Behind me there was a boy I know, Justice. Justice said: ‘eish I’m sorry to hear about your brother’. I asked him why, he said ‘he passed away’. I asked him why did he say he passed away, he said: ‘someone said he was killed’. I told him ‘no, my brother is there,”’ Somizi said.

Somizi Mhlongoi said he forgot about that morning’s conversation when his brother attended a wedding and then went out with friends.

A few hours later his family got a knock on the door to say Archie had died.

“1am, 2am, we get a knock. Archie was found dead. Stabbed at a tavern. I was scared to tell my parents that someone had mentioned something like that in case they said I was crazy or lying,” Somizi said.

Still devastated by the news, guilt soon crept in and stopped Somizi from mourning properly.

“I felt guilt. I told myself I could have warned him if I had spoken about it (the boy telling me about my brother’s death). To this day, if I think of something or dream something, I share it,” Somizi said.

A similar experience happened with the death of his father and Somizi said it was this guilt that haunted him to this day.

“More than the actual event, it was me not mourning those people (properly),” he said
