Edward Kieswetter Biography/ Edward Kieswetter Profile

Edward Kieswetter is a South African leadership scholar and practitioner and President of Da Vinci Institute. He was appointed as the Head of tax agency SARS by President Cyril Ramaphosa on 28th March 2019.

Edward is also a devoted Christian, in the 1980s he was a church official and presided over many marriages. He also conducted the church choir. He is also a former wine collector.

Edward is also an educator and after leaving Alexander Forbes he took a stake in a private university called the Da Vinci Institute of Technology.

Edward completed his industrial instrumentation apprenticeship at Athlone Technikon in 1981. He has a diploma in electrical engineering from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. He has a bachelors degree in education from the University of the Western Cape as well as three master’s degrees; Master’s in education from University of Western Cape, an Executive MBA from Henley Business School and an M.Com degree in tax from North West University in Potchefstroom (2005).

In 1977 Edward began his career as an engineer working as an electronics engineering technician for the Cape Town municipality until 1981.

Edward revealed that during his years as an engineer he acquired building skills on construction sites.

“I can work with my hands. I will never be unemployed because I can take a piece of timber and convert it to furniture. I can take a piece of metal and create a tool. I can take some bricks and mortar and build a house. I can work with my hands. Where did I learn that? I learnt that at school and through my apprenticeship.”

In 1992 Edward joined Eskom as a general manager becoming the senior general manager for generation and power station manager for eight years until 2000 to join FirstRand as a senior executive. In 1999 he was crowned the best boss in the country.

Edward Kieswetter Alexander Forbes

Edward was appointed as the CEO of Alexander Forbes, South Africa’s largest pension administration, in 2010. At the time of his appointment, the company was in crisis after it was accused of stripping the surpluses of retirement funds.

As the CEO of the company, he resolved he R950 million claim against the company. He also sold non-core assets and eventually oversaw the company’s successful listing in 2014.

Edward Kieswetter SARS

On 27th March 2019, President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed Edward Kieswetter as the Commissioner for South African Revenue Service (SARS) with effect from 1 May 2019 for a term of five years. Edward was recommended by Pravin Gordhan, the minister of finance.

After the appointment, President Ramaphosa said: “We have every confidence that Mr Kieswetter has the experience, integrity and skills required to turn SARS around by restoring revenue collection, redirecting operations toward innovation, developing future leaders for the organisation, and restoring SARS’ credibility and integrity.”

Edward previously served as Sars deputy commissioner from 2004 to 2009. He established units that specifically focused on high-net-worth individuals and large businesses. These units were dismantled by former SARS boss Tom Moyane in 2015. The units were responsible for the collection of more than 30% of the total tax income.

In 2010 Edward joined the Shoprite board and has chaired the company’s remuneration committee since 2018.
