Arnav Gupta is the man who set himself on fire on the White House Ellipse on May 29, 2019. He suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at a hospital a few hours later. He was a former personal trainer and expressed his political ideas in artwork and in writing.

Arnav was born in New Delhi, India and was raised in the D.C. suburbs and was living in the Bay Area of California. His bio on his website reads;

Arnav attended Landon School, a private college prep school for boys graduating in 2004. After high school, he joined Boston University where he studied International Relations and Affairs graduating in 2008.

Arnav Gupta Maryland

Arnav lived in Bethesda, Maryland. His house was located on Cindy Lane. It’s unclear if he was actually living on the west coast; the Montgomery County Police referenced him as a Bethesda resident. According to the state’s Board of Elections database he was previously registered to vote in Maryland as a member of the Green Party, but his voter registration was not active at the time of his death.

There are minimal details about Arnav family apart from they reported him missing to the Montgomery County Department of Police. The department issued a press release stating they were concerned for Gupta’s “physical and emotional welfare.”

Arnav worked as a coach and an education consultant in Bethesda. While he was a student at Boston University he worked as a personal trainer. After his graduation, he got a job as a coach at the Landon School where he stayed for about two years.

Arnav Gupta Fire

On May 29, 2019, Arnav set himself on fire around 12:20 p.m. according to the Secret Service. This was two hours before police in Maryland announced that he was missing and that they were concerned about his mental state.

Witnesses said he erupt into a bright orange fireball at the Ellipse, which is a tourist-filled park on the Washington Monument.

According to CNBC, Alina Berzins was visiting the National Mall with her two cousins told them; “We saw this man he starts running, and then we saw him covered in flames.”

Alina added that the man collapsed as he was covered with a plume of white foam. This was after he was extinguished by the police.

Another person named Krisjan Berzins tweeted; “According to my daughter…she just saw a person that was on fire running across the White House lawn. Police and rescue have responded. They’re closing all surrounding streets right now.”

According to other witnesses, he was wearing a sweatshirt and was carrying a black bag. he shirt had writing on it but the witnesses couldn’t make out what it said.

Arnav Gupta Dead

Arnav died on May 30 of the burn injuries. The US Park police released a statement saying that Arnav succumbed to his injuries.

Arnav appears to have self-published on April 23, 2019. The book is titled “Memoirs of a Shadow President.” In one of the passage, he criticised President Obama and the Iran deal.
