He was brought up in McMinnville, Tennessee, in the Cumberland Mountains where his paternal family used to farm and also operate an ornamental plant business.
At the age of 12 his family moved back to Little Rock as a career opportunity for his father, who worked as a U.S Air Force, arouse. His father died three months later and as a form of grieving Smith planted a small garden in the backyard and began raising chickens. His poultry was exhibited at the Arkansas State Fair.
After graduating from the University of Manchester he returned to Little Rock and began the nursery and garden design business with his family. He was also a private tour guide to European gardens and began teaching gardening workshops at a nursery his mother had bought.
He began making regular appearances on local radio a weekly gardening segment on Little Rock television station KATV’s Daybreak show in 1989.

Smith launched his own production company, Hortus Ltd with an assistance from Gaston and Gloria Gibson, a couple who had been impressed with the work he had done on their home’s garden landscape
In 2000 Smith began a program, P.Allen Smith’s Gardens which was largely shot at Smith’s historic home in Little Rock’s Quapaw Quarter.
In 2009 he founded the Heritage Poultry Conservancy which promotes the local-food movement, organic gardening, and the preservation of heritage poultry breeds.
