Roberta McCain Bio

Roberta McCain (Roberta Wright) is the mother of the late late Senator John S. McCain III and the widow of Admiral John S. McCain Jr. She was born on 7th February 1912 in Muskogee, Oklahoma, U.S.

At the age of 93 in 2005 she bought a Peugeot while travelling in France when she was told she was too old to rent a car. She later shipped the car to the US and drove it across the country to San Francisco to gift it to her great nephew.

McCain Family

On 21st January 1933 she eloped in Tijuana,Mexico with John S. McCain, Jr. At the time she was a student at the e University of Southern California and McCain was attached to USS Oklahoma (BB-37).

Roberta gave birth to John in 1936. When john was held captive she wrote to President Lyndon B. Johnson on 1st November 1967 her support of his policies in Vietnam as a “parent of a son who was shot down in Hanoi, last week, and is now a prisoner-of-war…” In June 1968, Roberta McCain told Parade magazine, “Religion has been of great importance to us in our concern for Johnny, religion and the military tradition of my husband’s family. We all pray for the time when we’ll see Johnny again.”

When John McCain was released from captivity on 15th March 1973 after serving five and half years his mother was notified that he had shouted expletives at his captors, Mrs. McCain’s response was, “Johnny, I’m going to come over there and wash your mouth out with soap.”

John McCain said of his mother: “My mother was raised to be a strong, determined woman who thoroughly enjoyed life, and always tried to make the most of her opportunities. She was encouraged to accept, graciously and with good humor, the responsibilities and sacrifices her choices have required of her. I am grateful to her for the strengths she taught me by example.”

During John’s 2008 presidential campaign Roberta was active in his campaigns despite her age.

In November 2007, her comments about Mitt Romney, his role in organizing the 2002 Winter Olympics and Mormonism during an MSNBC interview generated minor political controversy and forced her son to respond to clarify her remarks.

On May 13, 2009, she appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.[19] Her comments about Rush Limbaugh and Keith Olbermann created a stir with politicos on both sides even after her son’s failed presidential bid.

During John’s acceptance speech for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008 he thanked his mother for raising him.

“My friends, when I was growing up, my father was often at sea, and the job of raising my brother, sister and me would fall to my mother alone. Roberta McCain gave us her love of life, her deep interest in the world, her strength, and her belief that we’re all meant to use our opportunities to make ourselves useful to our country.I wouldn’t be here tonight but for the strength of her character.”

John McCain Funeral

On 30th August she attended a Phoenix memorial service for her son, John McCain and is expected to attend upcoming services at the Capitol, the National Cathedral and the Naval Academy.

She is expected to attend the formal ceremony at the US Capitol honoring her son’s life and service to the nation on Friday morning. The late senator will lie in state at the US Capitol.

On Saturday she is expected to attend McCain’s memorial service at the National Cathedral in Washington where former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush will deliver eulogies, as well as a private memorial service for her son at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, on Sunday.
