Anthony Wright is a former American football quarterback in the National Football League. In the course of his eight years in the NFL he played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Dallas Cowboys, Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals and New York Giants. He was shot on July 1, 2019 following an altercation with girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend.

He started 19 games in his NFL career (seven each for the Ravens in 2003 and 2005), and earned a Super Bowl ring with the Giants during his final healthy season in the league.

Anthony Wright High School Career

Wright began his career at West Craven High School where he played as a quarterback. He was named All-state, SuperPrep All-American and Gatorade Player-of-the-Year during his senior year. He finished his high school career with 4,890 passing yards, 44 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

Anthony Wright College Career

He joined the University of South Carolina with a football scholarship. During his freshman year, he redshirted but was a backup behind Steve Taneyhill, making 17 out of 27 completions for 207 yards, 2 touchdowns and one interception. He became a starter during his sophomore year posting 1,850 passing yards, 8 passing touchdowns, 3 interceptions, 90 rushing yards and 3 rushing touchdowns.

He suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee as a junior during a match against the University of Tennessee which prompted him to miss two final games of the season. He had 1,685 passing yards, a school record 18 passing touchdowns, 5 interceptions, 44 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown.

As a senior he recorded, 899 passing yards, 10 passing touchdowns, 10 interceptions, 56 rushing yards and 3 rushing touchdowns.

Pittsburgh Steelers

After the 1999 NFL Draft Wright was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Pittsburgh Steelers. The team later kept him as the fourth-string quarterback. He was waived on the fourth-string quarterback.

Dallas Cowboys

Wright was signed by the Dallas Cowboys to their practice squad on August 30, 2000. He was promoted to an active roster in November. Wright became the backup quarterback after Tony Banks was cut in 2001. He was released from the team on September 1, 2002, following the acquisition of quarterback Chad Hutchinson during the offseason, while stating that Stoerner was better suited for the third-string quarterback role, in light of Wright’s ambition to be a starter.

Baltimore Ravens

In 2002 Wright was signed by the Baltimore Ravens to their practice squad. On October 15, Wright was activated from the practice squad. The Ravens won five of their last six games with Wright posting a 5-2 record, he finished the season with 1,199 passing yards, 9 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.

During the 2004 season, Wright missed after having surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. During the first season of 2005, he was named the starting quarterback but was again demoted after having a 2-5 record.

Cincinnati Bengals

New York Giants

Wright signed as a free agent with the New York Giants on April 13, 2007. He was named the third-string quarterback in a season that saw the team win Super Bowl XLII. He suffered a back injury on August 18, 2008. He was placed on the injured reserve list on August 30. He wasn’t re-signed the next season and decided to announce his retirement.

On July 1, 2019, Anthony was shot multiple times by William “Willie” Moses Hooker Jr. who is his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend. The Concord Police said that they received a call to 1212 Middlecrest Dr. NW at 12:49 p.m. where gunshots were reported. They found Wright with multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to the hospital where he underwent surgery and was listed in stable condition.

The police said that according to the eyewitness Wright got into a verbal altercation with his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend. This began after the “Ex” showed up to drop off his daughter. The police identified him as William “Willie” Moses Hooker Jr. and issued a warrant or assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury with intent to kill.
