Mark is the man who took SAT and ACT exams for the children of wealthy parents as part of a multi-million-dollar fraud and bribery scheme aimed at getting rich kids into elite universities.

Mark Riddell is a 36 years old Palmetto, Fla., resident who is the man accused of taking tests on behalf of rich students in the college admission scheme masterminded by Rick Singer. Mark is a former director of college entrance exam preparation at IMG Academy, a prestigious prep school that he attended between 1995 and 2000.

While attending Sarasota High School he was a tennis player. He also trained at IMG Academy according to their website he was was a ranked ATP tour tennis professional, a division I NCAA tennis player.

While at Harvard University he played Division 1 tennis. He also played in the All American Championships and was part of a team that was ranked No. 17 in the country. He compiled a 78-43 singles record and 92-46 doubles record while at Harvard.

Mark is one of the people involved in college admission fraud. According to the authorities, Mark worked directly with William Rick Singer. Singer would discuss with his clients what kind of score they wanted their child to get without raising any red flags and then would instruct Riddell to attempt to get that score.

“So if your daughter took the SAT on her own the first time and got a particular score, (when) retaking the exam if the score goes up too much that would invite scrutiny. So Singer would discuss with parents what kind of score was impressive, but not too impressive, and then would instruct Riddell to attempt to get that score and he was just good enough to do it.”

In one case from July 2018, Riddell took an exam in his hotel room for a child who became sick and was unable to fly to Houston to take the exam, which was going to be corrected by Riddell.

Mark Riddell Charges

Mark is being charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud, as well as conspiracy to commit money laundering. He is expected to face a judge in Massachusetts on April 12.

According to prosecutors, he has been cooperating in the investigation since February in the hope of obtaining leniency when he is sentenced.

“I want to communicate to everyone that I am profoundly sorry for the damage I have done and grief I have caused those as a result of my needless actions. I understand how my actions contributed to a loss of trust in the college admissions process.

I assume full responsibility for what I have done. I do, however, want to clarify an assertion that has arisen in the media coverage. I absolutely, unequivocally never bribed anyone, nor has the Information filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office charged me with any form of bribery

I will always regret the choices I made, but I also believe that the more than one thousand students I legitimately counselled, inspired, and helped reach their goals in my career will paint a more complete picture of the person I truly am.”

Mark was a student at IMG Academy and later join the institution as a director of college entrance exam preparation. According to the school website: “His knowledge of test preparation, tutoring prowess, athletic background, and experience as a former IMG Academy student make him an important mentor for IMG Academy student.”

The profile highlights Riddell’s talents in helping students gain admission to Stanford, Duke, Columbia, Dartmouth, University of Chicago “and many other notable institutions.”

After the college admission, fraud IMG Academy released a statement saying they have suspended him indefinitely.
“Riddell has been suspended indefinitely as we investigate this matter.”
